Some kind of help is the kind of help,
that helping’s all about.
And some kind of help is the kind of help,
we all can do without
— Shel Silverstein (from Free to be you and me)
One of Spencer’s favorite toys is the dishwasher. It has become nearly impossible to load or unload the dishwasher while he is awake, as he wants to crawl inside and check it out. We have to give him credit for having good taste, since the dishwasher is a very cool machine. Usually I keep him away from it, but occasionally I let him play with it. I have found that he is less likely to climb in if I situate him on the side of the door, instead of the top. In this little video, Spencer seems to want to help unload the dishwasher. Unfortunately, it is not clean.
Spencer seems more and more interested in what we are eating. The other day I made penne with butternut squash sauce, and Spencer really wanted to try some. I think that he liked it even more than we did!
Several days ago we received a wonderful forest green sweater hand-knit by Kathleen Harriman for Spencer. It fits really well, with a little room to go. What great timing too, since it has been pretty chilly lately.
We have been working for several months with Spencer to get him to climb down things safely. That is, not head first. This includes beds, couches, and stairs. He is finally starting to get the idea. Every once in awhile he still tries head first, but after a little reminding, he goes back to feet first. Here is a little video of him climbing down the stairs by himself.
The last week or so has been quite cold. Yesterday the high was 11°F, and it was -10°F when I woke up this morning. Since it has been chilly, it has been good weather for chili. On Sunday we went over to Aunt Betty and Uncle Phil’s for chili and Christmas tree decorating. Melissa and the Link family also came. Spencer had a great time playing with the Link children.
The last several days have been quite cold here. The highs have been in the 20’s since Wednesday (except for yesterday, when it got up to 35°F). Because of the cold, we haven’t been taking Spencer outside much. This is very unfortunate, since Spencer really loves going outside. I have bundled him up a couple times to go shovel, which he seems to enjoy. This morning he actually feel asleep in the backpack while shoveling. So I guess he must not be too cold. We have to thank Dave and Ellen for both the backpack and the snowsuit. Both are indispensable.
Spencer really likes bagels (and pizza crust). Sometimes he chokes on it a bit, but less all the time. He is getting some more teeth now (the top two next to the middle ones — he has yet to get the middle two), so it probably feels good to have something to chew on.
At some point this past week, Spencer discovered that he could not only cruise around on furniture like couches, but also with chairs, and that he can actually push around the chairs. So now we spend quite a bit of time each day pushing around chairs (or the exersaucer). He is not too good at steering, so I have to help him with that. He has also been pretty talkative lately. I think he is saying: “I don’t need no stinking walker! I make my own walkers”
